The Voice Surges into 6th Season

Many American reality TV shows have come and gone over the years. There have been many which started out with a big bang and large audiences – only to subsequently fizzle when the competition from other similar shows began to sizzle. The Voice, which is now into its sixth season, is one such program which has managed to maintain a consistently high level of fan interest since it made its debut in April 2011. It’s also managed to score very well with the critics, as evidenced by the long list of awards and nominations that it’s managed to bag since its introduction. This long list includes wins at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards, and the Teen Choice Awards. The teen demographic has been particularly important to the high level of success which the show has been able to achieve. Now, as it soars into yet another exciting season, NBC will be hoping that it’s able to further enhance its reputation as a big crowd puller and pleaser.

The Voice’s Formula for Success

voice coachesDifferent reality shows follow different paths to success. However, when it comes to reality singing competitions, there are a number of time-tested formulas that always seem to produce rich dividends. Here’s a look at some of the key features of the show that keep fans coming back for more from year to year.

  • Talented contestants with interesting personal stories

You just can’t have a successful reality singing show without a cast of talented contestants.  Gifted singers and musicians are truly the lifeblood of any show like The Voice. Over the years, the program has managed to attract many dynamic vocal talents with big personalities and compelling personal stories. The last season of the show featured one of the best stories yet. Tessanne Chin, the eventual winner of the competition, was a virtual unknown in the United States before wowing everyone with her outstanding rendition of Pink’s “Try” during the blind auditions. Subsequently, the Chinese-Jamaican reggae fusion artist captivated audiences with her outstanding vocal range and likeable personality as she ran through the competition like a hot knife through butter. It eventually emerged that she was on the verge of packing it in before entering the competition. However, her time on The Voice (and in the “Land of Opportunity”) threw her career a lifeline that now has her primed to achieve international musical stardom.

  • Influential judges with a lot of knowledge to share

Do you watch The Voice as much to see the coaches as you do to see the actual contestants? If you do, you’re probably not alone. The producers of the show have done a phenomenal job of attracting some of the best and brightest professional entertainers to coach, mentor, and groom the respective talents who’ve entered the competition over the years. Adam Levine, the dynamic frontman of the Grammy Award-winning band Maroon 5, has been a fixture on the coaching panel since the show’s first season. Country music star and multiple Grammy nominee Blake Shelton has also been a member of The Voice family from the start. A collection of other outstanding coaches have also lent their talents to the show on a rotational basis through the seasons. All of them – eccentric singer-songwriter Cee Lo Green, pop songstress Christina Aguilera, sultry singer-songwriter Shakira, and soulful performer Usher – are multiple Grammy Award winners. They bring all of the traits that have made them successful to the table when offering guidance to their young (and not so young) protégés.

  • You get the chance to be a judge

In today’s environment, active fan/viewer participation is critical to the success of any reality singing competition. Every show that’s worth its salt now allows you to throw your support behind the singer you fancy by casting a vote for them via a number of diverse channels – both online and offline. However, The Voice has taken it to another level by giving you the power to play an even bigger role in supporting your favorite contestant on the show. A partnership between NBC and Universal Republic Records saw the show pioneering the innovative “iTunes song purchase” voting model. This model gives you the ability to vote for your fancied contestant by purchasing a version of the song that they perform in that week’s live show from the iTunes Store. However, you won’t just get any old version of their song. You’ll get an exclusive studio version.

Season 6 sees Shakira and Usher returning to the big, red chairs.

Who’ll emerge victorious on The Voice this season?

Your guess is as good as mine. That’s the beauty of a show like The Voice. The contestant who starts off the strongest might not necessarily be the last man (or woman) standing when the curtains eventually come down. How last season played out perfectly illustrates the unpredictability which is characteristic of reality talent competitions. There were many people who saw Matthew Schuler as a likely winner of the competition during the initial stages. However, as he and other more favored talents fell by the wayside, the likes of winner Tessanne Chin and runner-up Jacquie Lee just kept going from strength to strength. Can early season favorites Bria Kelly and Christina Grimmie buck the trend this year? We’ll all just have to wait and see.

When can you watch?

The sixth season of The Voice hits the airwaves on Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET. You’re invited to tune in if you want to be treated to some eardrum-seducing, eye-popping entertainment from some of the best musical acts who are on the verge of breaking through in the music biz.

Stay On Schedule with These Time Management Apps

Have you ever had so much work to do that you wished the day was twice as long as it actually is? Ever been caught floundering around under a pile of tasks as the deadlines for their completion draws closer with every tick of the clock? If you have, you’ll surely agree that there are few things more nerve-wracking or disconcerting. Unfortunately, as many of us know all too well, time never waits for us to catch up by standing still. It’s always ticking on into the future. The fact that there are only so many hours in a day makes it imperative that we use the time that we have as efficiently as we possibly can. Thankfully, there are a number of mobile apps available that can assist us in keeping things on track. Here are a few that you can use to ensure that you stay right on schedule.

5 Apps to Help you Escape Time Traps

Humans are naturally given to procrastinating. It’s also not unusual for us to get so caught up that we lose track of time. To overcome these twin problems, we often require help from apps which were specifically designed to keep us from falling prey to these time traps. Here’s a look at five of the many useful ones out there:

1.      Astrid Tasks

time managementThis is one of the most popular to-do list/task manager apps currently available for Android devices. Its simple, intuitive user interface allows you to quickly and easily access all of the various functions and capabilities that it places at your fingertips. The standard features that you’ve grown to expect are all there. This includes alarms, reminders, voice memos, etc. However, Astrid Tasks’ functionality and usefulness to you is extended by its capacity to seamlessly integrate with the various other communication and productivity tools and services – including e-mail – which you use to stay on top of things.

2.      Swipes

This iOS app is a throwback to a much simpler age in mobile device-supported time management. It doesn’t feature many of the bells and whistles that numerous other apps of its kind bring to the table. However, this is one of the main reasons why it’s proven itself to be so effective for so many people. This daily planner eliminates much of the unnecessary clutter that you’d typically have to deal with when using other apps that allow you to do a million and one things at the same time from their home screen. It allows you to easily narrow your focus to urgent tasks by swiping away those that can be completed at a later time.

3.      Checkmark

Compartmentalizing is one of the most effective time and task management strategies that you can employ when confronted by a significant volume of activities. Checkmark allows you to compartmentalize tasks based on the location in which you need to perform them. Based on the unique pattern of your life, you can choose exactly where these locations are. Do many of your daily activities take place at the bank or supermarket? Well, you can choose to include that specific location on this iOS task manager’s to-do interface. The geolocation capability that the app relies on provides you with a timely reminder of the activities that you need to perform whenever you come within a particular radius of the locations you’ve identified.

4.      Wunderlist

Wunderlist is a popular Android productivity app that has all the features that you’d expect to get with a top time management app. Its clean interface allows you to quickly and easily get around as you schedule all the tasks that you need to accomplish from day to day. Best of all, however, are the capabilities it offers that make it possible for you to easily collaborate with colleagues. Working from home and need to collaborate with work colleagues on a project? Or, do you need to share assignment-related tasks with your fellow group members or study partners? All tasks that you designate can be quickly shared with other folks within your productivity circle.

5.      Time Management Tips

Knowledge is power. Even the best and potentially most useful apps will not be able to deliver all of the benefits that they were designed to if we don’t arm ourselves with the requisite knowledge to make best use of them. That’s where the Time Management Tips Android app comes in. It provides you with a host of very helpful tips and suggestions that can assist you to better manage the time which is at your disposal. This repository of time management information is particularly useful if you are a young person who isn’t as seasoned as the pros in sticking to your schedule.

The Final Word

We all have to contend with time and task management issues. It’s often a very serious challenge for us to try and successfully complete all the activities that we set out to do at the start of a day, week, or month. Fortunately, there are a number of apps that we can use to make this difficult task a little bit easier to achieve. Many of them can be downloaded free of cost.

XFINITY TV Store to Stock Warner Bros. Movies & Shows

Having more choices is always better than the alternative – having less. This is a sentiment shared by almost every TV service subscriber throughout the United States. The average customer always thinks it better to have more viewing options than they have hours in the day to fully enjoy. This is one area of life in which being spoiled for choice is a very, very good thing. This is one of the main reasons why television service providers are constantly engaged in the process of expanding the respective libraries from which their subscribers can select content to view – whether these are movies or television shows. Comcast, which has one of the largest TV subscriber bases in the country, is no different. In fact, it’s traditionally been at the forefront of innovations that extend greater choice and convenience to its millions of customers. The company’s recently announced content merchandising agreement with Warner Bros. is yet another example of this commitment. This partnership is primed to provide customers with a lot more options than they’ve previously been able to enjoy.

The More the Merrier

Are you an XFINITY subscriber that enjoys blockbuster movies? Or, are you a fan of riveting dramatic series or gut-busting comedies? If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, the freshly formed alliance between Comcast and fellow industry juggernauts Warner Bros. is truly something to get really excited about. The agreement allows the company’s subscribers throughout the country to conveniently access a wide range of content produced by Warner Bros. via its popular XFINITY On Demand digital store. This means that they’ll be able to instantly get their hands on many movies and TV shows by simply entering the company’s easy to navigate virtual store. Once ordered, all of this content is theirs to enjoy for the period specified. They can watch as often as they like during that time. They can watch at anytime they like. Subscribers can even watch on a multiplicity of devices – whether they’re at home or away. For movie lovers, in particular, the best part is that they don’t have to wait as long as they’d otherwise have to wait to get their hands on these flicks. XFINITY’s On Demand digital store routinely delivers them weeks in advance of their DVD debuts.

What to look forward to from Warner Bros.

Prior to this momentous development, the average XFINITY subscriber already had a wealth of viewing options at their disposal. Now, those choices have increased exponentially. This is due to the fact that Warner Bros. is one of the United States’ preeminent producers of entertainment products such as movies and television shows. Its reputation is built on the production or distribution of some of the highest grossing and most critically acclaimed films in history. The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2, and Inception form just a small sample of the mega movies which have rolled off the Warner Bros. production line in recent years. Some of these titles have already arrived in the XFINITY On Demand digital store. Meanwhile, others are on their way. Here’s a look at some of the Warner Bros. movies and TV shows which have either arrived or been earmarked for distribution via this channel.

  • Already Available

Gravity, which is currently available to subscribers via XFINITY On Demand, was one of 2013’s most celebrated releases. It stars the Academy Award-winning duo of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as space-goers who’re left stranded somewhere out there after a cataclysmic extraterrestrial accident. The movie and its contributors have been nominated for a total of 10 honors at the upcoming 86th Academy Awards – including the coveted “Best Picture” accolade.

Here’s a listing of some of the other in-demand films and TV series that customers are currently be able to order and watch for their pleasure – at their leisure – through the XFINITY On Demand digital store:

  • Argo (movie)

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (movie)

  • Man of Steel (movie)

  • Pacific Rim (movie)

  • The Following (TV series)

  • Coming Soon

In its recent release, the company also indicated that there are plans in the pipeline to flood the On Demand marketplace with even more hit movies and series from Warner Bros. The imminent fulfillment of this promise is something to which subscribers can look with great entertainment expectations.

A Bit More about the XFINITY On Demand Digital Store

The XFINITY On Demand digital store is a virtual one-stop shop for subscribers who are seeking to watch or buy their favorite shows and movies without being restricted by the transmission schedule of a broadcaster. Content ordered there can subsequently be watched on a variety of devices – including a number of Android and iOS-supported smartphones and tablets. They can also buy many of the titles available via this medium. This option allows them the opportunity to watch the content purchased whenever and wherever they desire.

Just the Beginning

All indications suggest that the recent content merchandising partnership between Comcast and Warner Bros. will be a long and mutually beneficial one. XFINITY TV service subscribers can expect to have access to many more movies and television show episodes. This’ll include some of the biggest blockbusters to come out of Hollywood, as well as some of the most gripping serials.

McMann Looks to Dethrone Champ Ronda Rousey at UFC 170

Ronda Rousey is one of those rare athletes with the potential to transcend the sport in which she participates. Her unique combination of beauty and brawn has seen her achieve significant success both inside and outside of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) ring (octagon). She’s the reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion. The undefeated 8-0 record that she currently holds in the mixed martial arts arena has also generated an aura of invincibility around her that’s quickly made her one of the most marketable American sports personalities. Then, there’s the other side of the woman many fans fondly refer to as “Rowdy”. That’s the side which casts her in the role of model and film star. (She famously appeared in ESPN The Magazine’s “The Body Issue” edition in 2012. The 27 year old California native is also set to make her big screen debut in the action-packed flick The Expendables 3, which is set to be released on August 15.) However, when the multi-talented superstar steps into the ring against a hungry Sara McMann On February 22, her reputation, popularity, and earning power will count for very little.

Clash of the Titans – The Similarities

Ronda Rousey

The highly anticipated bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Sara McMann headlines the UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann fight card, which is scheduled to take center stage inside Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Events Center. While there are many other exciting matchups on the bill, there’s no doubt that most attendees and TV viewers will have most of their attention squarely focused on the clash which pits both of these top female fighters against each other. On the surface, the two combatants appear to have very little in common. However, a closer look at the careers of this duo of outstanding fighters serves up some very interesting parallels. Here’s a rundown:

  • They’re both undefeated

Due to the deafening buzz surrounding Ronda Rousey and her 8-0 record, you might’ve found it extremely difficult to hear that Sara McMann has also never experienced the agony of defeat in her professional career. The 33 year old challenger enters UFC 170 with a perfect 7-0 record in the bouts that she’s contested so far. Admittedly, there are quite a few people who share the opinion that she hasn’t faced the quality of opposition that her more decorated rival has come up against. However, while there might be some merit in this view, you just can’t totally overlook the fact that she’s developed the healthy (and hard to break) habit of winning.

  • They’ve both represented the United States at the Olympics

Ronda Rousey isn’t the only one who’s carried the red, white, and blue standard with distinction at the Olympic Games. Sara McMann is also a medal-winning Olympian. She preceded Rousey to the Olympic medal podium by capturing the silver medal in the women’s freestyle wrestling event at the 2004 edition of the prestigious competition in Athens, Greece. Rousey’s bronze medal-winning effort came at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where she was the only American judoka (judo competitor) – male or female – to walk away with a coveted medallion. So, from this perspective, they’re both decorated American ambassadors. This is yet another interesting storyline heading into the big showdown on Saturday, February 22.

Clash of the Titans – The Differences

Fans of sports such as mixed martial arts and boxing will tell you that “styles make fights”. Generally, contrasting fighting techniques (and personalities) contribute to the most compelling contests. Here are a few key differences between Rousey and McMann that could make this clash the amazing spectacle that you’re hoping to see.

mma workout

Sara McMann

  • McMann is the more versatile fighter

There’s no disguising the type of fighter that Ronda Rousey is. She’s a submission specialist who tries to get things done and dusted in the shortest time possible. All of her nine professional mixed martial arts bouts have ended with her opponent throwing in the towel after being pinned to the mat and locked in her signature arm bar submission move. That’s not to say that she can’t win the fight by employing any other strategy. On the other hand, McMann’s demonstrated a bit more versatility during her undefeated run. She’s knocked out an opponent, forced three to submit, and slugged it out for unanimous decision victories over three more. It’ll be interesting to see if she’ll be able to force Rousey out of her comfort zone during their upcoming bout.

  • McMann is soft-spoken; Rousey is decidedly not

Ronda Rousey is many things. However, soft-spoken is one thing that she definitely isn’t. She speaks her mind at all times – even when it rubs other people, including some of her opponents, the wrong way. On the flipside, McMann has been described by numerous mixed martial arts insiders as soft-spoken and polite. In the lead up to the fight, this personality clash has been one of the many compelling storylines.

How to Watch

I’m sure that there are many questions floating around in the heads of fans as they prepare to watch Sara McMann face Ronda Rousey at UFC 170. All of these questions will be answered on the night of February 22. Four of the six bouts on the preliminary card can be seen on Fox Sports 1. However, you’ll need to purchase the event on pay-per-view to watch the marquee matchup and the four additional fights that comprise the main card.

Flappy Bird Falls…But Other Games Continue to Soar

Immersing yourself in the world of mobile gaming is always a good way to take a short break from the realities of your daily life. Those long business meetings suddenly seem so much shorter when you’re able to intermittently escape your boss’ monotonous monologue by playing a stage or two of your favorite game. So, too, does that seemingly never-ending train ride that you have to endure at least two times for the day. I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s really hard to imagine living in a world in which mobile games didn’t exist. The fact that mobile gaming apps consistently remain among the most heavily downloaded monthly is a clear indication that millions of other folks also share this sentiment. Since the start of 2014, one particular game has grabbed most of the headlines: Flappy Bird.

The Rise and Fall of Flappy Bird

app for app storeWhen it was released in May 2013, there were very few people who could’ve predicted that the unassuming Flappy Bird mobile game would’ve gone on to achieve the elevated level of popularity that it eventually did. However, within the space of a few short months, the game had managed to attain cult status among millions of fans in the United States and around the world. For some, its charm resided in the fact that it looked and felt like a throwback to a bygone era in the history of gaming. (There was not a 3-D character or complicated storyline in sight.) For others, surprisingly, it was the fact that it was so difficult to get “Flappy” through the Mario Bros.-like obstacle course that players had to navigate. As it turned out, it was this same tidal wave of publicity that eventually led to the original version of the game being withdrawn from both Apple’s App Store and Google Play by its developer.

The game’s popularity increased exponentially during the early part of 2014. As its profile increased, so did the attention that critics focused on it. Critiques of its design and the gaming experience that players were able to enjoy soon started flooding in from various quarters. So, too, did the reports that many fans were seemingly becoming addicted to playing the game. (Many of the Flappy Bird-inspired viral video rants that are still floating around on video-sharing websites such as YouTube speak volumes about how obsessed some people still are with the game.) According to the game’s developer Dong Nguyen, this was ultimately the factor that prompted him to remove the game from the various online app stores to which fans had been flocking to get their Flappy Bird fix.

Other Popular Mobile Games for You

Okay, so the original version of Flappy Bird isn’t available for download anymore. (Of course, there really is no way to tell for sure that Nguyen won’t eventually have a change of heart.) In the interim, however, fans of the withdrawn game can still enjoy a number of other popular mobile games. In the unlikely event that you haven’t yet downloaded any of them, this might just be the perfect time to discover what they’re all about. Here’s a quick look at three of these options:

  • Ironpants

This game is a good option for anyone who wasn’t quick enough to get in on a download of the original version of Flappy Bird. In many respects, it is quite similar to the recently withdrawn title. The look and feel of both games is very similar. So, too, is the mission that you’ll take on when you go up, up, and away with the game’s caped feature character. The fact that you’re required to navigate your way through an obstacle course at relatively higher speeds actually makes it a bit more challenging than its more famous counterpart.

 gameplay app

  • Candy Crush Saga

There are a number of very good reasons why Candy Crush Saga has been so popular for such a long time. However, for many players, much of its appeal lies in the fact that it’s so easy to play. As with most other logic-based tile-matching games, it really doesn’t take much for you to get fully into the swing of things. There are even tutorials to help you out in the unlikely event that you find yourself stuck in a rut. You, like millions of others, might also find it attractive because it’s very colorful and vibrant.

  • Temple Run

You’ll probably love Temple Run if you were captivated by the sense of adventure and ever-present danger that characterized the Indiana Jones movies. This classic endless running game casts you in the role of an intrepid explorer – like Indiana Jones. It takes you on a high-octane thrill ride that sees you snatching ancient artifacts and staying one step ahead of a troop of maniacal monkeys.

The Parting Shot

A lot of very interesting developments have happened in the world of mobile gaming over the last few months. We’ve seen Flappy Bird’s meteoric rise. Unfortunately, we’ve also seen its withdrawal from all of the online outlets that so many people have gone to get their personal downloads. Despite these dramatic changes, many things have remained the same. Many of the classic games we’ve grown to love are still thrilling players all around the world.

Comcast and Partners Aim to Address 4K Content Issues

Many experts will tell you that 4K TVs are riding the crest of a huge technological wave that’s poised to dominate the future of television viewing. When fully optimized to perform at their best, these consumer electronics headliners will allow you to enjoy programming that’s sharper than you’ve ever been treated to previously. This promise is what prompted so many people to watch the 2014 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which was one of the biggest showcases yet for these ultra high definition (UHD) dazzlers, as closely as they did.

Virtually all of the major TV manufacturers came out and displayed their latest wares in this increasingly competitive category. Public reaction to these highly anticipated products was largely favorable. However, a particular concern that’s long hovered over these televisions again made an ominous appearance. This concern revolves around the relative shortage of 4K content that exists out there. A recently announced Comcast-driven initiative is set to address this situation in a big way. The result: much more high-definition programming that’ll do justice to your potent 4K TV.

samsung televisions

Comcast Partners with Samsung

Comcast recently announced another initiative on which it will be collaborating that could significantly alter the 4K TV landscape within the near future. This latest partnership is with the South Korean electronics giant Samsung. (Samsung is one of the world’s most prolific manufacturers of 4K TVs. It’s also been responsible for releasing some of the largest televisions of this type that our eyes have beheld in recent times. Many of these were on display at January’s CES.) It revolves around the development of a platform that will facilitate the convenient delivery of such content to Samsung UHD TV owners who are also XFINITY subscribers. According to company officials, an XFINITY TV 4K app is among the solutions that you can look out for later in 2014. This app will allow you to access an ever-expanding library of 4K movies and television shows via the provider’s On Demand service. Streaming of this content will be done via the Internet.

Previously Announced Content Partnership

The proposed content delivery system that will be devised with Samsung is intended to ensure easy access to a wealth of 4K content that the provider is currently in the process of developing with its partners. This coalition of partners includes some of the most prominent programmers and content providers operating within the content production and broadcasting arena today. This collaboration has the potential to address the shortages in 4K content that have checked the even more rapid growth of the technology’s consumer base during the period since it emerged. In announcing the partnership in January, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Video Services for Comcast Cable Matt Strauss stated that the company would continue to “push the boundaries of high-definition technology to deliver the best possible experience to …viewers”. He went on to indicate that they’re additional developments in the pipeline that could further impact the way in which you consume programming – specifically, 4K programming.

A Look at what could be on the Horizon

Okay, so we’ve established what’s been said in recent weeks regarding the 4K content revolution that’ll be televised to XFINITY subscribers before the year’s out. It’s really worth noting that NBCUniversal is among the programming partners that Comcast will be working with to make it all happen. NBCUniversal, which is one of America’s largest producers of news and entertainment products, is owned by Comcast. Based on the relationship that exists between both entities, the chances are very good that much more 4K content will hit the market before we bid adieu to the year 2014. Here’s look at some of the content producers and broadcasters from which you’ll likely be able to access significantly increased volumes of varied 4K programming in the not too distant future:

  • 4k televisionNBC
NBC is home to some of the most watched shows on TV. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Chicago Fire, and The Blacklist are among the highly acclaimed dramas that it currently broadcasts. It’s also one of the dominant players in the late night and reality segments of the market.

  • USA Network
Over the years, USA has earned a reputation for airing many original shows that are worth watching. Its current programming schedule features a number of original and syndicated dramas that fit snugly into this highly watchable category – including Psych, Royal Pains, and White Collar.

  • Syfy
There are few channels that cover the Sci-Fi genre as comprehensive as Syfy. Lost Girl, Haven, and Being Human are among the dramas that science fiction fanatics can tune to the station to watch.

  • Universal Studios
This is one of the United States’ premiere movie studios. It also has a well-established reputation for distributing some of the biggest blockbusters to make it to theaters annually. Some of the highest grossing films of all-time – including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Jurassic Park – have received the Universal Studios stamp of approval.

The Final Word

The ongoing evolution of 4K TV technologies and the continuing expansion of 4K content options are phenomena that many people will be keeping their eyes on as 2014 moves along. Comcast is one of the companies at the forefront of this thrust. They’ve recently outlined plans that could soon see millions of American subscribers enjoying their television viewing more than they’ve ever done before.

Exciting Events to Highlight 2014 Millrose Games

The 2013 track and field season helped to further secure Usain “Lightning” Bolt’s legacy as one of the greatest athletes to ever slip on a pair of spikes and take to the track. However, while Bolt remained the most recognizable face in the sport, there were a number of other stars who also managed to stamp their names and faces in the minds of spectators all around the world.

Many of these breakout stars were Americans. New York native Mary Cain was one of the athletes who made the biggest impression on the national and international scenes. The teenaged middle distance sensation ran all the way to the final of the of the 1,500-meter event at the 14th IAAF World Championship in Moscow, Russia. After mixing it up with some of history’s best competitors in the event, she came away from her amazing Russian adventure with a highly creditable 10th place finish. Her early form in 2014 suggests that she is even stronger and faster heading into her appearance at the 2014 edition of the famed Millrose Games.

6 Events to Watch at the Armory

the millrose games

Mary Cain

  • NYRR Wanamaker Mile – Women

The 17 year old Cain headlines the competitors in this marquee event, which is always one of the most highly anticipated at the Millrose Games. The young phenomenon signaled her intentions to have another big year in 2014 when she set a new world junior indoor record for the 1,000-meter distance at a recent meet in Boston. However, if she’s to cross the finish line first in her hometown, she’ll likely have to ward off a strong challenge from veteran American 1,500-meter runner Morgan Uceny. Uceny represented the United States in her event at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

  • NYRR Wanamaker Mile – Men

Moscow World Champs 1,500-meter silver medalist Matthew Centrowitz is the pre-race favorite heading into the prestigious men’s mile event. He’s likely to face some stiff competition from a very good field that includes New Zealand’s 2008 Olympic 1,500-meter silver medal winner Nick Willis. While he’s probably not in the type of shape to figure prominently in the race, a lot of the attention of the spectators and viewers will be focused on former American middle and long distance sensation Alan Webb. This race is likely to be the final indoor competition of his interesting career.

  • Paavo Nurmi 2,000-meter run – Men

American middle distance legend Bernard Lagat has long been one of the most popular faces to compete at the Millrose Games. The master tactician, who will celebrate his 40th birthday later this year, is an eight-time winner of the Wanamaker Mile. However, on this occasion, he’ll be concentrating all of his energies on getting the better of Nick Willis, who’ll be doubling up, and a host of his fellow Americans.

  • Mel Sheppard 1,000-meter run – Men

Three of America’s best male middle distance runners – Nick Symmonds, Duane Solomon, and Erik Sowinski – will be featured in the 1,000-meter event at this year’s renewal of the Millrose Games. 2013 World Championship 800-meter silver medalist Symmonds is likely to enter the salivating showdown as the slight favorite. However, there isn’t much to choose between him and the other two main men who he’ll face on the 15th. Solomon, who also had an outstanding season in 2013, will be very eager to make up for the disappointment he faced in the final of the 800 meters in Moscow last year. Meanwhile, Sowinski will be looking to repeat the defeat he inflicted on Symmonds and Solomon when they toed the line in a 600-meter race at the 2013 Millrose Games.

  • Road to Rio 800-meter run – Women

Three of the world’s brightest female middle distance prospects will lock horns in the Road to Rio 800-meter run. 19 year old Ajee Wilson will carry American hopes into what’s expected to be a titanic clash with Jamaica’s reigning NCAA 800-meter indoor champ Natoya Goule and Iceland’s world junior outdoor two-lap champion Anita Hinriksdottir. However, this event would have been an even more mouthwatering prospect if Mary Cain, who was originally down to compete in the four-lap race, had opted to contest it instead of the women’s Wanamaker Mile. Nonetheless, the high quality and youthful field assembled should give the thousands of fans expected at the Armory ample reason to cheer hysterically.

  1. 60-meter dash – Men

You won’t see superstars Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, Yohan Blake, or Justin Gatlin competing at the Millrose Games on the 15th. Nonetheless, you can still expect to see a drag race down the 60-meter straightaway between a collection of very good young American sprinters – including Olympian Isiah Young and 2013 NCAA indoor 60-meter champ D’Angelo Cherry. The seemingly ever-present Jamaican threat will come from former 2005 World Championship 100-meter silver medalist Michael Frater.

Get in on the Action

The Millrose Games is one of the most prestigious indoor meets on the annual track and field calendar. This year’s edition is poised to add another storied chapter to its long and distinguished history. You can catch all of the live action from this celebrated track and field event when the festivities get underway at 3 p.m. ET (on NBCSN).

Practical Ways to Protect Your Mobile Device

There are millions of Americans who have very special relationships with the various mobile devices that are their constant companions throughout the day. The importance of these gadgets revolves around the varied activities and tasks that they allow us to get done. You can use them to keep in constant communication with your family members and friends. You can also use them to access the wealth of diverse information and other resources that the World Wide Web has to offer. In addition to all of these practical uses, the mobile devices that we hold so dear are increasingly playing the role of fashion accessories. They turn heads. They open eyes. They can even create favorable perceptions of us in the minds of others. However, some of the attention that these devices attract can be quite unwelcome. If you own a high-end mobile device, it’s definitely not outside the realms of possibility that somebody with “sticky fingers” has got their beady eyes on it. Here are some of the things that you can do to ensure that they don’t get their hands on it as well.

  • Be careful where and when you use it

cell phone securityUnfortunately, many mobile devices are magnets to people who would like to steal them from us. This is why it’s so important that you limit the exposure of your smartphone or tablet to these ever-present threats. You need to carefully assess the environment in which you are before taking out your mobile device and placing it in full view of the people around you. This risk assessment requires that you carefully evaluate the social setting in which you find yourself. Where am I? Who are the people around me? These are pertinent questions that you need to ask before taking your prized smartphone from the bag or case in which you have it housed. Are you at a cocktail party where you’re surrounded by socialites? Or, are you in-transit through a part of town with a high street-crime rate? Of course, there are occasions on which the need to expose and use your mobile device overrides any possible safety concerns. (It’s only natural that emergencies will crop up from time to time.) However, as a general rule of thumb, it’s always better to be underexposed rather than overexposed.

  • Always ensure that you lock it

Your mobile device’s hardware is obviously very valuable. However, the software and data that’s stored on it is oftentimes even more precious than the beautiful case or shell that you’re able to see. Locking your mobile device is one of the simplest strategies that you can employ to protect the information that you’ve saved. By simply setting up a password or personal identification number (PIN), you’ll be able to restrict access to your data by anyone who isn’t able to input the login credentials required. This initial line of defense can be very effective in a situation where your smartphone or tablet is lost or stolen. Specifically in instances where your gadget is lost, it can prove a solid enough barrier to keep out opportunistic priers. The average person who finds such a locked device might not be inclined to go through the hassle of cracking the access codes and other defenses that you’ve put in place. (Of course, you’re not likely to be so lucky if your device is stolen by a professional whose sole intention is violating the integrity of your personal data.)

  • Utilize security apps and services

It’s a very good idea to use the various security apps available on the market to protect your mobile device and the data that’s stored thereon. In fact, in today’s world, it would be foolhardy not to do so. The fact that there are so many threats floating around demands that you utilize all the security resources which are at your disposal. These resources include a wide range of apps that can deploy an additional layer of protection around your smartphone or tablet. Apps such as Find My iPhone and Android Device Manager allow you to use your online account or another mobile device to initiate a raft of security protocols in these worrying situations. Here are some of the protective functions that you can perform once they’re installed on your gadget:

 mobile device manager

  • Track your device

Many of these apps allow you to use GPS to track your phone or tablet. You’ll literally be able to look on a map and see where your device is located in real-time.

  • Reset your PIN

The ability to remotely (and repeatedly) reset your device’s password can give you the upper hand against someone who’s trying to gain unauthorized access to the data that you’ve stored on it.

  • Erase your data

There are rare situations in which your device becomes unrecoverable. When all else fails, you still have the option of erasing (wiping) all the data that you’ve stored on the smartphone or tablet. That’ll eliminate any chance of your sensitive data falling into the wrong hands.

There are numerous measures that you can employ to boost the level of protection around your mobile device. Some of these are quite simple and easy to deploy.

Comcast Plans 2014 Network DVR Rollout

The life of the average TV fanatic is filled with many emotional highs and lows. You’ll surely be able to relate if you’ve ever planned your whole week around an episode of your favorite show, or allowed the events depicted in said show to plunge you into a deeply melancholic mood. Yep, there are many things that can drive an avid television watcher up the wall. Of that unsavory bunch, there are very few that can compare to missing an episode of a program that we just can’t afford to miss. There was time when such tragic events occurred quite frequently. However, with the widespread introduction of the digital video recorder (DVR) by many cable TV service providers, these unfortunate happenings have become a thing of the past for many subscribers. The DVR has truly revolutionized the way in which innumerable people throughout the United States (and the wider world) interact with TV programming. Now, Comcast is on the verge of extending the capabilities of this extremely useful technology even further. By channeling the power of the cloud, XFINITY subscribers will soon be able to depend on their provider’s reliable network to perform these functions.

How the rollout will play out?

network dvrMatthew Strauss, Comcast Senior Vice President and General Manager of Video Services, stated in a recent interview with FierceCable that the rollout is “going to start initially in the Boston area”. While no definitive start date has yet been announced, all indications point to an imminent deployment. So, if you live in the popular Massachusetts region, you might just be among the initial batch of subscribers who get the chance to test drive this new network DVR offer. However, if you’re going to be among the pioneers, you’ll need to have the DVR-supported XFINITY X1 box installed in your home.

Boston, X1 & network DVR

Boston has long been one of the most fertile testing grounds for new services being introduced by Comcast. In May 2012, it was also the first market in which the revolutionary X1 entertainment platform made its appearance. Back then, the product was very well received by Bostonians. As a result, it was subsequently introduced to customers in many additional markets throughout the United States. The highly anticipated network DVR service will rely heavily on the same cloud-based infrastructure that’s supported the provision of very good user experiences to millions of XFINITY subscribers across the country.

How (Network) DVR works

In-home DVR devices allow you to control TV programming in a way that just wasn’t possible up until relatively recently. With one at your disposal, you’re able to record programming on the device’s hard drive for viewing at a later time that’s more convenient for you. This time-shifted viewing model puts the control of all your favorite TV programming right in the palm of your hands. Network DVR services, such as the one that Comcast will roll out shortly, take these capabilities a step further. They eliminate the need for you to have a personal digital video recording device in your home. Instead, you can rely on the remote content storage capacity that’s offered by the provider. Comcast customers will be able to access the various features provided through the X1 program menu that’ll incorporate digital video recording functionality. By simply accessing this menu, you’ll then be able to initiate the recording of all selected programming on the reliable network of servers that Comcast will make available specifically for this purpose.

Benefits of using a network DVR service

There are numerous benefits that you’ll be able to tap into when you use a network DVR service. The first, and most obvious, is that the use of network resources eliminates the need for you to purchase or install any additional hardware. Here are a few more that you can look forward to:

  • Easy access to features

The ease with which you’re able to access its various features is one of the most appealing characteristics typically associated with network DVR service. The X1 platform forms a critical part of the network infrastructure that Comcast will be using to provide the offering to its customers. Its hardware (and complementary software) has generally been lauded by subscribers for the ease with which it allows them to access the various features that it brings to the table. Similarly, Comcast’s network DVR promises to significantly simplify things.

  • Reduced service downtime issues

Cloud-based network services are also generally subjected to less downtime than those which are supported by individual devices within subscribers’ homes. This is due to the fact that a problem originating from the provider’s end can generally be resolved much more quickly than multiple ones that crop up with the individual DVRs of multiple customers. In theory, this means that you shouldn’t have to worry as much about service downtime issues.

Coming to your home soon?

Comcast is on the verge of rolling out a network DVR service that will further revolutionize the way in which you watch your favorite TV programming. XFINITY subscribers based in Boston are slated to be the first to benefit from this impressive innovation.

Looking to Upgrade Your Computer? - 4 Reasons You Should

Computers – whether of the laptop or desktop variety – still play very critical roles in the lives of millions of people throughout the United States. They remain among the most important productivity tools that many of us have at our disposal. Big businesses depend on hundreds (or thousands) of them to provide their employees with the resources required to get the job done. So, too, does the average small business owner across America who relies on their trusty desktop or laptop (and a complementary software package) to keep their home-based operation chugging along at its maximum efficiency. These gadgets also continue to satisfy the entertainment and recreational needs of many people. They remain particularly popular with those of us who just can’t wrap our minds around the idea of watching something like a full-length movie on the relatively smaller displays that come standard with the average mobile device. However, as with any other electronic device, our beloved computers eventually age to a stage where we have to seriously consider whether it’s time to replace them with a newer model.

4 Ways to Tell you Need a Computer Upgrade

It’s always difficult to part with anything to which we’ve become attached. A computer is no different. However, it’s worth remembering that keeping an old, inefficient computer going will only compromise your productivity and the quality of the user experience that you’re able to enjoy. So, how exactly do you determine that the time has come for your good ol’ supercomputer-sized desktop to be retired in the public’s (i.e., your) interest? Here are five telltale signs that’ll let you know when that fateful moment has arrived:

 laptop memory

  • It runs painfully slow

There are very few things more annoying than dealing with a computer that moves at a pace so slow that it’d cause even a snail to blush with embarrassment. Such a situation typically results when your computer’s random access memory (RAM) resources are stretched beyond their natural limit. In many instances, the RAM of older machines is placed under this strain because we choose to run a number of programs on them simultaneously. It’s become so common for us to multitask that we think nothing of it. However, for a machine that doesn’t possess the requisite memory resources to support such activities, it can be a painfully slow process. If you routinely have to deal with such slowness, you need to seriously start thinking about a computer upgrade in the near future.

  • It constantly runs out of hard drive space

There was a time not too long ago when the latest desktops routinely came with 40 GB and 80 GB internal hard drives. Back then, the average person didn’t typically have the need to store as much media on their machine as the average modern-day American does. Now, however, the full capacities of such hard drives can be totally consumed by archiving just a few high definition (HD) movies. If you constantly run into storage shortage issues when trying to save files to your machine, the chances are pretty good that you need to start planning an upgrade immediately. (Of course, the internal storage capacity of your computer can be supplemented by external hard drives, flash drives, etc. However, it’s always good to have these gadgets to provide backup (secondary) storage, as opposed to primary storage.)

  • It doesn’t meet the minimum hardware requirements for basic software installations

Any computer is only as good as the software that’s installed on it. If it isn’t running the right programs, it isn’t much more than a decorative shell that accentuates the décor of the room in which it’s placed. Unfortunately, there are many older machines that don’t possess the basic hardware required to facilitate installation of most modern software titles. Let’s illustrate by taking a look at the minimum hardware specs that Microsoft recommends for users who intend to download its very popular Office 2013 productivity suite:

  • computer parts1 GHz processor

  • 1 GB RAM (32-bit version) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit version)

  • 3 GB available hard drive space

If your computer doesn’t meet these basic requirements, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to tap into the power and potential productivity that Microsoft Office 2013 brings to the table. Of course, this is unless you get a much needed computer upgrade.

  • It constantly gets infected with viruses

There are more threats floating around on the Internet than we’d like to even acknowledge. Viruses, Trojan horses, and worms are just a few of the malicious programs that can infect your computer when you go online. These threats can negatively impact the performance of your machine while corrupting many of the important files that you have saved on it. Older machines are naturally more susceptible to these dangers because their hardware and operating systems are less likely to support the antivirus software that could provide them with protection. So, if your old desktop or laptop is constantly being infested with these programs, it might just be time to get an upgrade. After doing so, it’s strongly recommended that you install an up-to-date antiviral package that’ll prevent your newer machine from suffering the same fate as the one it replaced.

The End of the Road

No matter how much you treasure your old computer, the day will eventually come when you’ll need to replace it with a newer, more advanced machine. Thankfully, there are a number of performance-related indicators that you can look out for when seeking to determine the right time to make this important move.

Fallon Replaces Leno on The Tonight Show

Steve Allen. Jack Paar. Johnny Carson. Conan O’Brien. Jay Leno. What do all of these famous funny men have in common? Well, they’ve all had stints as hosts of one of America’s longest-running TV programs: The Tonight Show. This iconic late-night talk show has been an institution on American TV for well over half a century now. During that time, its various hosts (and their many interesting guests) have given the gift of laughter to billions of people all over the world. They’ve compelled us to tune in night after night to enjoy the unique comedic spin that they’ve been able to put on some of the biggest (and most serious) stories of the day. Depending on how long you’ve been a fan of the show, it’s likely that you’ve been around for some of the many changes that have taken place over the years. However, despite all the changes that have occurred, The Tonight Show has always managed to survive the transition from one era to the next. On Thursday, February 6, the curtains will come down on yet another era in the show’s history. Jay Leno will take his final curtain call as host.

jay leno show

Jay Leno delivers the opening monologue during the inauguration of ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’.

Jay Leno has had a long and colorful relationship with The Tonight Show. If you’re a longstanding fan, you might just remember his debut appearance on March 2, 1977. Subsequently, his well-received comedic routines led to him becoming a regular face on the show. The ruddy-cheeked comedian so endeared himself to audiences that, by 1987, he was soon making regular appearances as a substitute host for Johnny Carson. When Carson stepped away from hosting duties in 1992, executives at NBC gave the 40-odd year old New York native the golden opportunity to step in and try to fill the enormous shoes vacated by the controversial TV icon. (Carson had been the face of The Tonight Show for three decades.)

The Jay Leno Era

Leno’s reign as the new “King of Late Night” got off to a rocky start. There were suggestions in some quarters that David Letterman, who eventually moved over to host the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS, should have been the man to claim the throne. However, despite the various controversies that were seemingly ever-present during his time at the top, Leno managed to keep large audiences tuning in to The Tonight Show to watch him do his thing. There was, of course, the brief period during which another high profile funny man – Conan O’Brien – assumed the show’s reigns. This situation was short-lived, though. Leno and his uncanny ability to deliver a punchy punch line soon returned to head up, to some degree, the flagging fortunes of the show that he contributed to keeping at the head of the increasingly competitive late-night TV line.

Feedback from the Critics

The Tonight Show franchise has accumulated numerous nominations and awards from various bodies while Jay Leno has been fronting it. In fact, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (and those behind it) earned over 40 major award nominations between 1993 and 2005 – including a Primetime Emmy Award for the “Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series” in 1995. The show also won two “Favorite Late Night Show” accolades from the organizers of the now defunct TV Guide Awards in 1999 and 2000.

Jimmy Fallon looks to the future as he prepares to become the next host of The Tonight Show.

The significant patronage received from national television audiences has also served as a glowing indicator of the special place that the show occupies in the hearts of millions of people throughout the United States. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno has consistently attracted larger audiences than its main competitors within the 11:35 p.m. to 12:35 a.m. ET slot. According to Nielsen stats (up to the end of January), the current season has seen the show pull in an average audience of 3.9 million viewers per episode. Though slightly lower than in some previous seasons, this figure still compares very favorably with the 2.9 and 2.6 million people who opted to spend their nights with David Letterman (Late Show with David Letterman) and Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) respectively.

Jimmy Fallon Cometh

Popular comedian and TV personality Jimmy Fallon, who is scheduled to take over the reins from Leno on February 17, will host the latest installment in The Tonight Show franchise – The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This won’t be the only change that’ll come into effect at that time. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno is currently being shot at NBC Studios in Burbank, California. However, the series hosted by Fallon will return to one of its former homes, NBC Studios in Manhattan, New York. The Roots, who serve as the house band on Fallon’s current show, will assume the same responsibilities when he makes the transition into the prime late night spot.

The end of an Era

It’s often said that the only constant in life is change. The life of a long-running TV program, such as The Tonight Show, is often marked by this evolutionary feature as well. The next stage in this iconic show’s evolution will take place in February 2014. The 6th will see Jay Leno exiting stage left. Meanwhile, on the 17th, Jimmy Fallon will take center stage.
