The 2015 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show took place last week (January 6-9), and as expected, patrons were excited about all the new tech being showcased. This included all the wearables that are scheduled to hit the market throughout the year, 4K and 8K TVs and of course, the upgrades to the features of smart phones.
Also on show, however, were a lot of tech gadgets that can best be described as unconventional. Don’t take my word for it though, read through the list below and judge for yourself:
Belty
Before we get into the details, anyone want to take a guess at what this gadget is? Too easy? Agreed. Headlining this list of unconventional gadgets showcased at the CES 2015 is Belty (yes, the name needs some work), a smart belt designed by French company Emiota.
Though putting a whole new spin on the term “wearable”, Belty is actually a pretty cool piece of tech. Not only is this device able to measure the waistline of the person wearing it, but it can also tighten or loosen itself as required – for instance providing a little more room after a five course meal. Being equipped with an accelerometer and gyroscope, it acts as a fitness tracker showing the wearer’s activity data throughout the day, and in the event of too much inactivity, it can also provide a gentle nudge that the wearer needs to get it going.
Dancing Queen
For many individuals who are thinking about going to the gym or exercising, their primary objective is generally to lose their unwanted belly fat. Thinking about it and actually doing it, however, are two very different things. One of the more common excuses is not being able to make the time, but with the Dancing Queen that is thrown out the window.
Coming to the US from Taiwan, the Dancing Queen is a massager like no other – the individual just sits and feels as the base vibrates while moving in a twist motion, shaping and trimming the waistline. The movement might make it a bit difficult to use the seat while enjoying a show on TV, but this is a pretty creative way to get back into those favorite pair of jeans.
Panasonic Smart Mirror
It may not be as conversational as the magic mirror in the Snow White adaptations, but the Panasonic smart mirror is certainly playing a role in expanding the “Internet of Things” phenomenon. At the CES 2015, this ingenious piece of tech was easily one of the more unconventional, but is likely to become one of the more useful.
The Panasonic smart mirror has the ability to scan an individual’s face and portray that image above the reflection that the mirror would give naturally. Subsequently, it can check everything from the individual’s wrinkles to the translucency of their skin, and make product recommendations that will help to improve or enhance the present condition.
In addition to this, the mirror also makes it possible for the individual to try a series of makeup options, which is much more time efficient than actually applying the various products just to remove them and repeat the process. These are being targeted towards department stores and similar establishments.
Raticator
Every homeowner will acknowledge that having pests and rodents on site makes them more than a little uncomfortable, and it can be argued that rats are the most hated of that lot. For those who are looking to get rid of them in a more modern way, the Raticator may just be the gadget they’ve been longing for. As far as unconventional goes, the name is right up there with its functionality.
The tunnel-shaped mousetrap uses infrared beams to determine when a rodent has entered, and subsequently delivers enough volts of electricity to exterminate it. Adding to the connected world, a text message is sent after each conquest is complete. Despite its guarantees to get the job done, there are a few who are skeptical about the gadget, mainly for its inability to differentiate “friend” from “foe”. Therefore, if you have a small kitten or puppy that wanders inside, it will not escape the wrath of the Raticator, so be intrigued with caution.
Pacif-i
For one reason or another, babies tend to get a bit restless, and this makes it difficult to execute certain tasks such as taking their temperature. With the Pacif-i, parents and guardians can now acquire this information with greater ease and with something that babies love – their pacifier.
With a built-in temperature sensor, caregivers can always get an accurate reading of how the baby is doing on their smart phone via the corresponding app. Other notable features of the gadget are a proximity sensor and a buzzer alarm that help to show where baby and gadget are at all times.
