Comcast NBCUniversal Paving the Technological Future

The topic of bridging the digital divide has been one that has garnered a lot of attention over the past few years, and as technology continues to expand at a rapid rate, the need to reduce this separation becomes even greater. Playing their part in the quest, Comcast NBCUniversal recently announced a five-year partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). During this time, the organization will contribute tens of millions in cash and in-kind to the BGCA, but of all that the partnership will facilitate, arguably the biggest talking point of the agreement is the initiative called My.Future.

A Great ‘Future’ Ahead

It can hardly be denied that great advancements are being made through technology, and being ‘in the know’ is one of the great tools anyone can have. The project My.Future – which was launched on September 17 – is designed to encourage exploring, building and communicating via the digital space through over 40 activities that BCGA members can be engaged in. Ultimately, it focuses on sparking interests in technology among members, and by extension equip them with the requisite knowledge of the digital world so they can go out and make a difference.

In addition to facilitating basic digital literacy such as how to surf the Internet, and how to communicate digitally, the program will also expose the youth members to more advanced aspects of the tech industry such as coding, game design and even robotics. My.Future will also encourage the safe use of the Internet, as members will be able to learn how to identify tools used my cybercriminals, such as phishing. The potential results of such a venture can be great, as the 4000-plus clubs that exist serve close to 4 million youth.

Speaking on the partnership, Jim Clark, President and CEO of BGCA stated, “Through our partnership with Comcast NBCUniversal, My.Future will give Club members the technology skills needed to pursue promising careers and thrive in today’s digital world.” He also expressed, “Today’s young people are digital natives, born into a world where technology is ever-present and constantly changing. In order to ensure great futures for all our youth, it is our job to keep up to date with technology and make sure it reaches the communities that need it most”. Comcast Corporation executive, vice president David L. Cohen also voiced his approval of the move, “We are proud to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to teach youth about the endless possibilities that technology offers, while helping to bridge the digital divide”.

As an extension of the partnership, four Boys & Girls Clubs were upgraded to ensure that those who sought to capitalize would not be at a disadvantage. The renovation of the facilities included computers, tablets, music studio tools and video-editing software.

Maintaining their Commitment

While this may be the largest partnership between Comcast and BGCA, I should be noted that it is not the first time that the two have come together to bring about greater accessibility to technology. In 2012, with a $50-million tech commitment already in place, Comcast contributed $200,000 to the Club Tech program. Similar to this move, the objective is to prepare the youth to take full advantage of the ever-developing digital age.

As far as their own contributions go, offerings such as Internet Essentials – a service which allows qualifying low-income homes access to the Internet at a manageable cost – are evidence that Comcast is determined to play a major role in whatever way they can.

Wide Spread Present and Future Impact

Whether through education, employment or being among the contributors of innovation, there is a lot for BGCA members to gain from the recently announced deal. Though it may come easy to some, not everyone has the conveniences that allow them to freely access the Internet and efficiently utilize the vast information that is stored on the network. Having such a structure that is designed to facilitate this while exposing youth to advanced technologies is more than welcomed.

By completing projects associated with the My.Future initiative, BGCA members will be able to earn certified digital badges that can subsequently be used to demonstrate ones technical competency, for instance on a resume. Having said that, it has been reported that over 8 million job posts will exist in 2018, specifically targeted towards those with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills. This can go a far way in laying the foundation for youth to capitalize on that demand.

Through partnerships with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and similar organizations, Comcast NBCUniversal is able to contribute to continued growth of the technology industry while further bridging the digital divide. Though it won’t change the situation in an instant, the success that this venture can bear in the future deserves to be acknowledged.

Universal said what? Furious 7 is not the end!

Ten-second cars. Unbelievable stunts. Adrenaline rush in one of its finest forms. These are the building blocks of one of the most beloved movie franchises in the history of motion pictures – The Fast and the Furious. Beginning back in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, the series has grown tremendously into one that pulls thousands to the box office with each release, and the same is expected of the upcoming release Furious 7 in a few months’ time.

Speaking on the movie franchise during a recent interview, Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures – the distributors of the movies – said what very few (if any) could have expected, “We think there’s at least three more… I think it’s still a growing franchise.” Yes, you read that correctly. Furious 7 is not the end! As to how a collection of seven films is still a “growing franchise” is somewhat puzzling, but we’ll go along with it for now.

More Than a Little Surprising

Take a survey among fans of The Fast and the Furious franchise, and it would be quite likely that they are surprised of the news to not only extend the series, but also extend it by a minimum of three additional films. Having already witnessed so much throughout the soon-to-be seven-movie catalog, it is hard to imagine what else the directors and producers will be able to come up with that will allow it to maintain its standard and extend for that long.

furious 7 “Fast 6″ didn’t disappoint with the action.

Notably, this is not the only reason that fans thought that this was the end. Following the death of franchise star Paul Walker on November 30, 2013, there were major concerns as to whether or not the series will continue. With the announcement from Universal Pictures that they will indeed continue with the filming of Furious 7, everyone anticipated this production to be the end of the line. Come to think of it, there were many expecting it to be the last even before Paul’s death, but that unfortunate event gave it an extra push in that direction. Evidently, the actual decision-makers had other ideas in mind.

Mixed Feelings

Aside from the obvious shock that the news brings, there is a huge wave of mixed feelings associated with it. In a single instance, lovers of the movie franchise don’t know whether they should feel excited or be wary of the productions to come.

While the films haven’t received equal fanfare individually, collectively there is no denying that The Fast and the Furious franchise is one of the greatest ever produced in the movie industry. Coincidentally, with over $2.3 billion earned globally, it is reported to be the biggest franchise to come out of the studios of Universal Pictures. There is no rush to see the franchise go, as some can’t get enough of the amazing stunts they manage to pull off.

furious 7 Paul Walker’s brother, Cody (right) stepped in to fill his space after the actor’s death. He’s also expected to join the team.

On the other hand, as the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Upon the release of Furious 7 – which is expected to be early next year – the franchise would have spanned an impressive 14 years. At the current rate, producing and releasing another three films could easily take it into another decade, and considering that Langley had said “at least three more”, who knows when they would actually close the curtains on the franchise. Surely, fatigue would have taken its toll by then, wouldn’t it?

Why Universal likes it, and why it could work

As with every other industry, the bottom line serves as a major decision-making factor for just about anything. Considering that Universal Pictures has grossed over $2 billion from the adventures of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriquez and company, why would they want to stop now? It is widely expected that Furious 7 will be the highest earner of the movie series – driven by the loss of Walker, no doubt – and subsequently, no one will be able to stop them from milking the franchise for all it’s worth. Not unless the world signs a petition begging them to, and the chances of that happening are just as farfetched as the idea of it happening.

In relation to why extending the franchise could work out for the studios, the answer is pretty interesting. As it is now, by the time the proposed films are to be released, many of the movie goers wouldn’t even have been born at the time The Fast and the Furious was released. By this time, they would have added a number of characters – Paul’s brother Cody is expected to join the team – and hopefully extend the storyline without losing the appeal – like the highly anticipated scene where they retire Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor. Therefore, not only would they be able to pull in the faithful viewers that have been following the storyline since its inception, but also the new generation who would have heard a great deal about the movies while growing up.

It may take some getting used to, but it is all but guaranteed that The Fast and the Furious franchise will extend beyond the upcoming release Furious 7. Given the success of the franchise thus far, the decision is understandable, but it has raised the eyebrows of a few who are concerned that Universal Pictures may be going too far with it. In time we’ll see whether or not it actually pays off, but don’t be surprised if it does.

Should "The Librarian" Really Be Made into a Series?

Within the film and television industry, adaptations and spin-offs of successful productions take place quite often. A few months ago, Turner Network Television (TNT) began airing the trailer for the series The Librarians – its latest addition to that expansive list.

The show will be a spin-off of the network’s franchise film series The Librarian, which comprised of The Librarian: Quest for the Spear, The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines and The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice. Throughout the productions, Noah Wyle starred as Flynn Carsen, a librarian with the Metropolitan Public Library. Instead of ensuring that books were being returned in a timely manner, he found himself tasked with protecting a number of historical artifacts that were more than what meets the eye. The three-film series began in 2004 and ended in 2008, but it won’t be long before fans will be able to see the Indiana Jones/National Treasure-like plot on their TV screens.

We are “The Librarians”

Evidently, TNT saw enough of a positive response to the film franchise to the extent that they ordered a 10-episode series of The Librarians, which is set to premiere on December 7. The main characters in the fantasy adventure show are Eve Baird (played by Rebecca Romijn), Jake Stone (played by Christian Kane), Cassandra (played by Lindy Booth) and Ezekiel Jones (played by John Kim).

the librarian Noah Wyle has carried all three “Librarian” films and look to do the same with the new TV series.

Notably, some of the stars from the films – inclusive of Wyle – will also be present in the series.

Different, Yet Similar

Dean Devlin, the production company owner who played a significant role in the film franchise, will serve as a producer in the upcoming series. Devlin is also noted for contributing to the success of another TNT original – Leverage – and it is with this that The Librarians bares similarities. Interestingly, Kane played a major role in that production as well.

Those who watched Leverage will know that as far as plots go, there is a vast difference between the two shows. Leverage was all about providing a level playing field for those who did not have the skills or resources to do so for themselves, while The Librarians will be focused on seeking out and protecting treasured historical items. Though the plot differs, however, there are a few details that remain the same.

Like Leverage, The Librarians will have a somewhat eccentric head – Jenkins (played by Jon Larroquette). The team also comprises of someone who it very skilled as “acquisitions”, and another to provide the “muscle”. With all that said, the major stakeholders of the production will be hoping that the similarity TV lovers will be talking about is longevity, as the former ran for a commendable five seasons.

Is a series really necessary?

Everyone is a fan of success, but it is oftentimes the case that this leads to making ill-advised decisions as a result. While the movie franchise was seemingly able to achieve the objectives set out for it, there is no evidence to show that a series following a similar mold will hit the same heights.

Looking at the hundreds of spin-offs (films as well as TV shows) that have been released over the years, in many instances individuals are left thinking that the producers should have been advised to leave well enough alone. Transporter: The Series is one show in particular that is beginning to raise a few flags, and while it cannot be said with any degree of certainty, The Librarians is seemingly moving in that direction as well. Fiction is a constant in the film and TV industry, but are viewers really interested in watching a show based on “a world where magic and reality collide”?

the librarian The cast (L-R): John Kim (Ezekiel Jones), Noah Wyle (Flynn Carsen), Rebecca Romijn (Eve Baird), Christian Kane (Jake Stone) and Lindy Booth (Cassandra).

The “Not Even Close” List

Over the years, there have been a number of TV series fashioned off films that failed to make any sort of (meaningful) impact on the industry. As things are now, there is every possibility that The Librarians will join the class with the following (not so illustrious) TV shows:

Blade – The Series (following the Blade movie franchise)

If for no other reason than Wesley Snipes (and there were other reasons), movie lovers were fans of the series of Blade movies. Snipes starred as the sword-slashing, vampire-killing, human/vampire hybrid who was all about (yea, you guessed it), killing vampires.

After a successful trilogy that ended in 2004, efforts were made to transform the film into a TV series to be aired on Spike. Despite a positive opening, the show was never able to come close to the standard of the movie, and it was eventually cancelled after a single season. In his defense, Kirk Jones did try, but can anyone other than Snipes really pull of the character?

the librarian The Blade TV series starring Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones just didn’t fare well.

Ferris Bueller (following Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

This one may be too old for many to remember, but it is almost a constant when looking at lists of shows that failed to compare. The 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was a major success, and so someone decided that a TV series would also strike gold. Unfortunately, the show seemed bound to fail from the start, as John Hughes – director of the movie – played no role in the production, and went as far as to ask that his name by distanced from it. Clearly, the writing was on the wall.

Do Smart Phone Designs Really Need to be Changed?

It is often said that change is a good thing. It can bring about innovation and open the door to great possibilities. Now while this may be true, one particular area where change is being brought into question is the change in the design of smart phones and similar devices.

Designs being suggested

Based on a recently discovered article, if all things go according to plan, major tech company LG will be unveiling smart phones that can bend some time in 2015, with tablets that can do the same to be unveiled in 2015 or 2016.  To what degree these devices will be able to bend is yet to be determined, but that hasn’t prevented the idea from being an easy conversation starter, particularly among tech-savvy individuals.

It would be expected that developers are on the lookout for that next big idea to take the world by storm, but it is unlikely that anyone could have imagined it to be smart phone design. As some may have already known, this isn’t the first time that plans are set in motion to bring about a feature that the market is unfamiliar with.

smart phone designs

The curved look

In October 2013, the consumer electronics market was introduced to the very first smart phones with a curved display – the Samsung Galaxy Round and the LG G Flex (which are actually a phablets, but they’re in the same ball park). Being the first in their class, there it was of little to no surprise that some saw the need to compare and evaluate them, but aside from the initial buzz, not much has been said.

Unlike the wave of wearable tech that was introduced to the market once their functionality spread, there have been very little talks of other manufacturers venturing in the “curved phone arena”. It could either be that they are looking to see what sort of reaction the phones already on the market receive, or they are simply not eager (or interested) to go in that direction. Considering that it has been more than a year since the release of both, the opinion is being geared towards the latter.

Do the designs need to be changed?

The Galaxy Round curves horizontally, while the G Flex curves vertically, but aside from this there appeared to be nothing distinct about either of them. The operating system, processor, RAM, camera, battery life, and all other specifications that people would assess before purchasing a smart phone are all within the general parameters. So why change anything at all? It is unlikely that anyone can point to a time when the traditional rectangular shape was being heavily scrutinized.

The word that registers the most when browsing through articles related to the new look of smart phones is “innovation”, but this seems like a weak justification in an era when technological advancements are so vast. What really was there to gain from creating a smart phone that is curved? How will consumers benefit from having a smart phone that can bend? Sure, it may look and feel “cool”, but is that the extent of its applicability, if there is any to begin with?

smart phone designs

Arguments for…

Not everyone is going to agree – of course, because that rarely ever happens – but the curved smart phones appear to be more about gimmicks and a marketing stunt than anything else. Having said that, there are some that have statements in support of said gadgets.

Among the arguments being proposed is that the curved look works better for the purposes of talking, as the microphone is angled closer towards the mouth. Notably, this feature is specific towards the G Flex.

Another argument in support of the arched shape is simply the way it looks. While it matters that the device is able to execute the desired functions on a day-to-day basis, there are those who like the way the smart phones look in their “far from traditional” shape. Supposedly, it is more modern with a greater look of class.

As an extension of this, the feel of the device is also a selling point (though it may not be a strong one). The argument is that it is a better fit for the hand than conventional shape as a result of the curve.

smart phone designsIt is widely accepted that “it’s the little things that count”, so it was possibly from this perspective that those who proposed the idea of curved phones did so. This is not being stated to undermine their work, but these “little” changes do not appear to significantly enhance the appeal of the devices or their use.

So the question remains, “Do smart phone designs need to be changed?” While the answer may be no as far as the “need” is concerned, the mere fact that it has already taken place, is an indication that there are those who want, and/or are open to the idea. No one ever said that change could only take place as a matter of necessity.

Madam Secretary: A Different Kind of Political Drama

As a part of their 2014 Fall TV season line-up, major network CBS introduced a political drama entitled Madam Secretary. Though there is still a long way to go in its debut season, enough has been seen of the eight episodes aired thus far to deduce that this TV series is a different kind of political drama.

The show is centered on Elizabeth Faulkner McCord (Tea Leoni), a former CIA analyst and college professor who was approached directly by the President of the United States, Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine) to assume the role of US Secretary of State. She accepts the role, and along with her family, relocates to the capital, Washington D.C.

Reactions to the Show

From the viewpoint of those who are big on figures, Madam Secretary has been in very good standing. Recently airing its eighth episode, the show has had more than admirable viewership numbers. Approximately 13 million live viewers were recorded for that episode, following its near 15-million premiere. Traditionally, a TV show that isn’t able to capture an audience would have a much larger disparity at this stage, so it must be doing something right. If any more convincing was required, couple that with the fact that CBS picked up the series for a full season – to comprise of 22 episodes – after seeing the figures recorded after only the sixth episode.

madam secretary Faulkner McCord (Tea Leoni) assumes the role of US Secretary of State.

Why is it different?

Admittedly, despite seeing the preview, there were no expectations of this show coming into the season. Having seen the episodes thus far, however, one feature of the show that has to be commended is that it does not shy away from actual politics.

It may be considered an uncanny feature to praise – particularly for a political drama – but it is more than justified. In every episode, Madam Secretary McCord is faced with scenarios where she (with the help of her team) has to exercise her knowledge, charm and instinctive decision-making abilities to resolve diplomatic matters. Of course, with the human element, there is going to be instances of personal drama weaved into the show – such as when one of Elizabeth’s daughters suspected that her father was cheating – but it doesn’t seem overemphasized.

Though largely unexpected, this was a welcomed “twist” to what has seemingly become the accepted mold of political dramas. The show’s tagline is “Not politics as usual”, and though it may be unintended, it does represent its difference from other shows of the genre.

madam secretary Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn).

What many are accustomed to…

Undoubtedly, one of the most popular series that falls under the category of political drama is the Shonda Rhimes production Scandal. Of the ShondaLand “#TGIT” three-show line-up, Scandal arguably boasts the most social media presence as “#Gladiators” make their opinions heard on just about every second of the show. Being an individual who has followed the progression of the show (though not religiously, as I’ve missed a few episodes), I must admit that I’ve questioned whether or not it is still fair to categorize it as a political drama.

Aside from the shots of the White House every now and then, and the various displays of “office politics”, is there really much of a political element to Scandal? It is certainly not fact, but watching it presents the image of maybe a 20-80 make up of the “political” to the “drama”, with most of that “80%” being centered on the relationship between Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn), as everyone around them just falls into place. It may have been a nice twist early on, but not everyone seems to be on board with their back and forth.

Does it have to be one or the other?

It would not be surprising if there were some viewers who are not a fan of Madam Secretary, as it does not have enough “drama”. Having said that, some would choose to criticize Scandal for being too dramatic. The question must then be asked, “Does it really have to be one or the other?”

If a neutral person was to provide their own definition of the term “political drama”, it is possible that their parameters would allow for both shows to transition easily into the genre. The opinion could further express that it does not have to be diplomatic politics, opening the door for a host of other shows.

madam secretary Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) does whatever he has to do to get what he wants.

Another popular show that falls within the genre is House of Cards. Arguably, this series has the best mixture of the three in terms of politics and drama. It focuses on the exploits of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) to get himself into a position of real power after being overlooked by the President of the US for the position of Secretary of State. More than anything, it is Frank’s desire for revenge and power that drives the show, and keeps the loyal following eager for the next episode. This is not to say that politics does not get a fair representation, however, as both diplomatic and office politics are evident.

Despite being far from the mold of other popular series in its genre, CBS’ Madam Secretary has been able to attract a loyal audience. Interestingly, this shift could prompt other shows to move in that direction, but that is a subject matter that only time can resolve.

Comcast Looking to Make the Holidays Even Happier

With the fast-approaching holiday season in mind, Comcast has dipped their hand into their bag of goodies – their own version of Santa’s sack perhaps – and come up with gifts that any homeowner would love to have. Through its home services brand Xfinity, the telecommunications company is looking to make the holidays even happier.

Starting November 10, prospective customers in all regions who acquire any one of a specific set of home service triple play packages (TV, Internet and Voice) will have the option to receive a Visa Card or a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. Homeowners who choose to subscribe to a Starter Xfinity Triple Play or HD Preferred Triple Play will be able to look forward to a prepaid Visa Card with up to $100. Those who acquire HD Preferred Plus Triple Play will be privy to a Visa Card with up to $150, or if they so desire, a Samsung Galaxy 8” tablet. Two other packages in the mix are the HD Premier Triple Play and the HD Complete, where the subscriber would be able to receive up to $200 or $250 respectively, or the 8” tablet.

Though it would be ideal for these offerings to be on the cards 365 days of the year, it actually comes to an end on November 30 for those in the Western region, and December 8 for those in the Central and Northern Eastern Demographic regions.

A better Black Friday/Cyber Monday you couldn’t imagine

Though it may not be recognized as an official holiday, it is evident that Comcast has no issue “upping the ante” for Black Friday and the subsequent Cyber Monday activities. While some may be seeking their “must-haves” in crowded retail stores, those looking to acquire home services packages can do so without the hassle, and possibly receive eve greater rewards.

With their Black Friday/Cyber Monday offerings that seem too good to be true those who subscribe to any of the packages listed above will be able to receive double the amounts quoted. Therefore, the Starter XF TP and HD Preferred TP will be up to $200, HD Preferred Plus up to $300, the HD Premier TP up to $400, and the HD Complete will be up to $500. Notably, the option of the Samsung Galaxy 8” tablet is still applicable to the coinciding packages. This promotion runs from November 26 to December 2 in all regions.

It Doesn’t End There

If for whatever reason a homeowner does not grab the opportunity to subscribe during one of the earlier mentioned promotional periods, there is still a chance to do so. Running from December 9 until the end of the quarter, subscribers will be able to receive cash back rewards – yes, the tablets are now off the table.

The Starter XF TP will revert to the option of a Visa Card with up to $100, but the others will change. HD Preferred TP will up to $75, HD Preferred Plus TP will be up to $100, HD Premier TP up to $150, and HD Complete will be up to $200.

It really can’t get much better than this, can it? The “traditional” gifts are still cool, but these Xfinity offerings can just about make everyone’s holiday that more enjoyable. The Latest Additions to "The Internet of Things"

It seems like ages ago now, but there was a time when smart watches and fitness bands were the first (and only) things that came to mind when someone mentioned “smart” products. This changed rapidly as coffee makers, toothbrushes and even egg trays were made compatible with smart phones and similar devices through mobile applications and the wonders of technology.

Smart tattoos that could administer drugs and generate power from sweat were among the more recent discoveries of how technology was being utilized to greatly expand the capabilities and functionalities of products we use every day. Having said that, it is unsurprising that the creative minds and engineers out there have continued to churn out new inventions that amaze.

Here is a look at some of the latest product additions to “The Internet of things”:

Baidu Kuaisou Chopsticks

For those who are huge fans of Chinese food – which many people are, this product is likely to peak your interest. The “smart” tool being referred to is the Baidu Kuaisou chopsticks. Who ever said chopsticks can’t be more useful than for simply putting food into your mouth? No one, hopefully, otherwise they’d be wrong.

internet of things

The sensor-equipped sensors of the chopsticks are designed to indicate to the user – through a supported device and app – whether or not the oils used to prepare their meal was good or bad. Among other things, the eating utensil would test the peroxide value and pH level of the cooking oil, ultimately determining its freshness.

Those who are unaware may think that these chopsticks are from a start-up, but Baidu is one of the largest search engines in that hemisphere, and it oftentimes referred to as “the Chinese Google”. Unfortunately, the Kuaisou is not yet available commercially, but this could all change very soon.

94Fifty Smart Sensor Basketball

Having trouble getting your arc right? Want to see how many dribbles it takes you to get up and down the court? Well instead of having a friend try to build their coaching credentials on you, a basketball can give you the information you require. With regulation size and weight, the 94Fifty Smart Sensor Basketball is quite possibly the best tool that any basketball player (and their “coach”) could require to get their game to the next level.

With motion sensors, a player’s ability in various areas of basketball proficiency is measured in real time. The relevant data of their shooting and ball-handling skills is all delivered to a nearby mobile device.

The (free) mobile application is able to track the history of up to four players who utilize the smart ball. Not only can it help a player to develop their skills through various challenges, but the app also facilitates “head to head” competition. Notably, the technology can be utilized on both Android and iOS devices.

Parrot Flower Power Wireless Plant Sensor

Always dreamt of producing a lovely garden on your own, but lack the expertise or a “green thumb” to do so? The Parrot Flower Power Wireless Plant Sensor can put these concerns to rest.

internet of things

Creatively shaped like a small branch, the gadget can either be placed in a flowerpot or directly into the earth, and with its sensors can be used to determine whether or not a plant is receiving enough sunlight, as well as the temperature and moisture of the soil.

Through the supported app, the plant sensor will send an alert to a smart phone or tablet when the plant requires attention. If you’ve forgotten to water your plants, this ingenious gadget will remind you. Boasting a database of over 7,000 plants, it is likely that adequate information – such as their basic needs and tips to keep them healthy – can be received for all the plants in your garden.

Smart Diapers

For years, parents (and even babysitters) have been hoping for an invention like this, and now it is a lot closer to reality. Soon, individuals will be able to purchase smart diapers for their toddlers, diapers that have the ability to send an alert when it needs to be changed.

Finally, parents will be able to avoid the dreaded “smell test”, or watch helplessly as the baby cries without knowing if he/she needs to be changed or fed. Aside from this, the diapers are also being designed to test the urine to alert parents as to possible medical issues, giving a whole new meaning to the term “early detection”.

Now, if only there were a gadget that would change the diaper as well. Or is that asking for too much?

Comcast Giving Businesses the "Edge"

For any business to function efficiently and successfully, communication has to be one of its top priorities. This refers not only to dialogue among employees of the organization, but also with its clients and customers.

For small and medium businesses, Comcast – through its subsidiary Comcast Business – offers Business VoiceEdge. This is a cloud-based private branch exchange (PBX) that business owners can utilize to ensure that their workforce is always connected and keeping everyone “in the loop”. Available across 39 states, this virtual system – which is just one of many voice-based services offered by the telecommunications provider – leaves business operators with one less thing to worry about.

Sharing his two cents on the matter, John Guillaume, Vice President of product management at Comcast Business stated, “Our new Business VoiceEdge mobility capabilities give workers seamless voice and unified communications that are tightly integrated with both their corporate offices and their preferred mobile devices.”

business voiceedgeHere is a look at some the features of this Comcast Business product that is giving companies the ‘Edge, as well as the benefits of having it:

VoiceEdge Mobile App

There are many businesses that require the staff to be out of office throughout the day, but that doesn’t prevent the employee from receiving a call during this time. The VoiceEdge Mobile App ensures that they never miss a call, regardless of their location.

Compatible with both Android and iOS devices, the “in office” capabilities that the app provides are more than convenient. Not only is it possible for all incoming calls to be forwarded to a number they choose, but those who utilize the technology can also make calls from the mobile device, showing the VoiceEdge mobile number.

In addition to making international calls via the app, users can also listen to their voicemail, record and select a voicemail greeting, and send the voicemail as an email attachment.

Softphone/Video Calling

Who says you need an actual telephone (or mobile phone for that matter) to make or receive calls? With Softphone with VoiceEdge there is no fuss.

Whether they are using of a Mac or PC, employees are afforded the luxury of making and receiving calls directly to the device with their business number. Given that they are likely to be situated in front of a computer when they are in office, this software program can reduce the need to have actual telephones all over the office.

Notably, if a webcam is present, video calling – which is another feature of the service – can also be facilitated through the technology. Aside from the computers, video calling is also possible providing that the VoiceEdge phones have built-in cameras, and considering that just about everyone is now using a smart phone, this is all but guaranteed. The simple touch of a button can initiate the video-calling feature.

Teleworker

In many organizations, it is a common practice for some employees to work from home. With the Teleworker, an individual can have the service installed at their house, essentially providing the same telephone capabilities that they would have in the workplace. Overall, the value of the teleworker cannot be emphasized enough.

Other standard features include selective call acceptance and call rejection, anonymous call rejection, basic call logs, and priority alerts.

Benefits of the Service

Cost-effective

As far as positives of the VoiceEdge go, this is arguably the best. Based on the fact that the system is run via cloud-based technology, the major equipment expenditure that accompanies the more traditional PBX systems is avoided. The presence of a reliable Internet service is enough to set the company on the right foundation.

Mobility

A common theme of the features mentioned above is the mobility that the VoiceEdge affords the staff. Whether they are contributing to the overall success of the company from home, or keeping in touch with clients when they are out of office, the system always them to carry out their functions from just about anywhere.

Workforce mobility has been touted as one of the key strategies that any business can implement to keep up with the growing business trends, so business operators are being greatly aided in their quest to do just that.

Technical Support

Being wise enough to acquire this Comcast Business service does not mean that business owners have the requisite knowledge to remedy any issues that may arise – whether with the hardware or software. As such, they would be pleased to know that Comcast would manage all required maintenance and software upgrades.

With more businesses reliant on technology to give them a competitive advantage, Comcast’s Business VoiceEdge is one medium through which this can be achieved. With advanced features and seamless connectivity, efficient communication will no longer be a problem.

Tech Designed for Baby’s Early Years

The phrase “isn’t he/she just the cutest thing” has probably been said an infinite number of times, and in just about all those instances, the subject of the statement is a baby. For parents, there is arguably nothing more satisfying that watching their child grow, witnessing all their memorable moments. That being said, parents aren’t always around to capture their cutest moments, and even if they were, they would still want the grandparents and friends to share in the experience.

This may soon be possible if design graduate Laura Cornet follows through on her project, and make the gadgets for “baby selfies” commercial. The “New Born Fame” project employs a set of soft crib toys that will automatically capture a video or snap a selfie once the baby’s reach triggers the sensor. The content would then be uploaded to social media platforms such as Facebook. The toys can also register the baby’s movements and track its location.

The social media accounts of parents are already riddled with hundreds of images they take of their babies, so why not allow the babies themselves to get in on the act.

Here is a look at some other tech gadgets designed for babies:

Carkoon

There is arguably nothing more important to the parents of a baby than the safety of the child. For their commute, one of the best techs that a parent could acquire is the car seat known as the Carkoon.

 carkoon

The name Carkoon is coined from the word cocoon, which is the casing for caterpillars and similar insects. In the event of an accident or once the car seat senses impact, the protective covering will be deployed immediately, mimicking the look of a cocoon. Being covered serves the purpose of protecting the child from broken glass or limiting any possible injury that may occur as a result of the impact.

Withings Smart Baby Monitor

As far as baby tech goes, there is arguably none that parents are fond of more than a baby monitor. Simply set it up in their room to hear when they are crying, or just to check that everything is “OK”. Among that very useful product line, the Withings Smart Baby Monitor is one of the standouts.

Like traditional monitors, the Withings Smart Baby Monitor allows parents to hear and see their child, but the additional features are what set this device about others. As many as three individuals can log in to the system remotely to see all that is taking place with the baby, and with a speaker it also makes it possible for them to talk to the child from wherever they are.

Concerned about when it gets dark? The infrared Night Vision LEDs – which turn on automatically – ensure that a clear image is always being delivered. With built-in sensors, parents can also receive a notification if the temperature and humidity of the room is not within the recommended parameters.

MamaRoo Bouncer

It’s quite likely that all babies – and their parents – would want to be inseparable for every moment of every day, but as reality sets in one party will eventually acknowledge that this isn’t exactly possible. Recognizing that babies tend to be restless when they don’t get what they want, the MamaRoo Bouncer is arguably one of the best solutions to keep both child and parent happy.

baby technology

Again mimicking nature – the name being devised from kangaroo – the baby seat provides loads of fun. Unlike the traditional bouncer that only goes up and down, the MamaRoo also moves from side to side. The movement modes include tree swing, rock-a-bye, car ride, ocean, and of course, kangaroo. Have a baby that loves sounds or a particular song? The smart bouncer also comes equipped with five sounds from nature, and is also compatible with an mp3 player, so they can listen to their favorites while they are up playing or sleeping. Nothing can replace mom and dad, but the MamaRoo Bouncer probably comes the closest.

Origami Power-Folding Stroller

As far as frustrating baby tech goes, a baby stroller would probably win by a landslide if a poll was taken. Parents the world over can attest to the complication of having to fold (or unfold) a stroller while the baby is in hand.

Relieving any sort of frustration is the Origami Power-Folding Stroller by 4moms. With the simple touch of a button, parents can stand aside and watch the stroller fold to their will in a matter of seconds. The LCD dashboard allows the individual pushing the stroller to know what the temperature is like – serving as a precaution for when it gets too hot or too cold, and it also comes equipped with lights to ensure that visibility is not an issue for that evening walk.
